A 1,000 km journey across Romania, a premium electric model, and a charging network that turned the road trip into a relaxed experience. Turatii.ro tested the new Volvo ES90 on a complex route, including highways, national roads, and varying road and temperature conditions.

The Volvo ES90 stood out through efficiency and comfort: an average consumption of approximately 19 kWh/100 km over the entire journey and a range of up to around 500 km under favorable conditions.

Charging sessions were carried out at Eldrive fast DC stations, with peak power levels of up to approximately 149 kW, depending on station availability and battery conditions.

The first major stop took place in Slobozia, where the vehicle was fast-charged in DC mode, reaching power levels of up to approximately 140–150 kW. During this session, around 25–30 kWh were recovered in about 10–15 minutes, enough to continue the route without range limitations.

The second stop was in Brăila, where charging peaked at 149 kW, with a total duration of approximately 38 minutes, during which around 39–40 kWh were added. This stop was also used to analyze the real-world charging curve, with a cold battery at the start of the session.

A third quick stop took place in Târgoviște, at a 150 kW DC station, where approximately 25–26 kWh were added in about 10–12 minutes, enough to cover the final segment of the route without any operational compromise.

In real-world use, average consumption stabilized around 18–20 kWh/100 km over the entire trip, with expected variations depending on road type. On highways at constant speeds of approximately 130 km/h, consumption rose to around 25 kWh/100 km, while on national roads and urban segments it dropped significantly, sometimes to 15–18 kWh/100 km.

Beyond the numbers, the car’s dynamic behavior was highly balanced. Ride comfort is one of its clear strengths, with a suspension tuned toward refinement that absorbs road imperfections very well without compromising high-speed stability. Steering is precise, but calibrated more for comfort than aggressive sporty driving.

Another important aspect observed in use is the predictability of range. In practice, the vehicle allows long distances to be covered without rigid planning, while fast charging turns stops into short breaks naturally integrated into the journey, with minimal impact on total travel time.
